Steve York Memorial Scholarship
The Axemen Lacrosse Club is honoured to provide a Memorial Scholarship in the name of long time Axemen member Steve York who passed away suddenly in 2014 at the age of 42.
Steve and his family were a part of the Axemen Lacrosse club for many years; his children as players and Maija and Steve as supporters and fans. Steve was devoted to improving the experience his children where having. He became involved as a coach, evaluator and ultimately serving the Axemen Board as both a member and as President.
One of Steve‘s passions was improving participation, skill and love of the game of lacrosse.
In memory of this, the Axemen Lacrosse Club has created the "Steve York Memorial Scholarship."
It is awarded to the graduating U17 player who best exemplifies the qualities Steve would have looked for in his players. It is chosen by his family.
CRITERIA:
1. A true team player (not necessarily the best scorer or best individual player)
2. The hardest worker on the floor. Always shows up, always ready to play, always giving all they've got.
3. Good game sense: A player who makes good decisions, makes the right positional pass, utilizes the whole floor.
These are the skills and qualities that Steve hoped to teach his team when he was a coach and those are the qualities he would want to see in a player awarded with this scholarship.
